La Tricolor went out of the 2026 World Cup without losing a match in regulation, falling 4-3 on penalties to Switzerland after a scoreless draw in Vancouver.
Colombia's 2026 World Cup is over. After 120 goalless minutes against Switzerland at BC Place in Vancouver on Tuesday, July 7, La Tricolor lost the penalty shootout 4-3 and went out in the Round of 16.
It was the tie Colombia could not break. Nestor Lorenzo's side pushed hard: Gustavo Puerta forced an early save, Jhon Lucumi rattled the crossbar in extra time, and Jaminton Campaz was denied by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel before squandering a golden chance in the 115th minute. Camilo Vargas kept Colombia level with a fine stop of his own. Nothing would drop.
From the spot, Juan Fernando Quintero and Luis Diaz scored, but Davinson Sanchez struck the crossbar and Kobel saved Cucho Hernandez. Ruben Vargas buried the decisive penalty to send Switzerland through to the quarterfinals.
It ends a run to be proud of. Colombia won Group K with seven points, beat Ghana 1-0 in the Round of 32, and left the tournament without losing a single match in regulation, out only on the cruelest margin the game has. Gracias, Tricolor.
