Colombia Slips Further in Latin American Innovation Rankings

A new report warns that Colombia's declining performance in innovation indicators could hurt long-term productivity if public policy and private investment do not respond.

Colombia Slips Further in Latin American Innovation Rankings

Colombia has fallen back in regional innovation rankings, moving further away from the leading group of Latin American countries, according to an analysis published on 16 September 2026.

The report cautioned that weaker scores across innovation indicators risk undermining the country's long-term productivity and competitiveness. Analysts noted that without a coordinated response from public policy and private investment, the gap with regional leaders could widen.

The findings land at a sensitive moment for the new de la Espriella administration, which has so far focused its early economic messaging on fiscal consolidation and spending cuts rather than growth or innovation strategy.

Colombia's competitiveness standing has been a recurring concern for business groups and multilateral institutions in recent years.
