Peso and Colombian Bonds Gain as Markets Bet on Fiscal Discipline Under New Government

Colombian financial markets have had a quiet but positive couple of days. The peso gained ground against the dollar over the last two sessions, supported by stable Brent crude prices and investor expectations that the De la Espriella government will maintain fiscal discipline, according to a morning market wrap published by a Colombian financial daily on July 29.

Local-currency TES bonds also saw inflows from foreign funds. Analysts noted that Colombia continues to benefit from relatively high real interest rates compared with regional peers, making the fixed-income market attractive to outside investors looking at Latin America.

A regional markets note from a Latin America brokerage, published on the evening of July 28, pointed to the combination of stable commodity prices and the orderly political transition as factors reducing near-term risk perception around Colombian assets.

The moves are modest, but they come at a sensitive moment: the new government takes office on August 7 and markets will be watching closely for early signals on spending priorities and the fiscal framework.
